The greatest night of European football ever to grace the pitches of Old Trafford. Roma currently the second best team in all Italy and defiantly a top European side of some class were totally blown away by some of the best quality football your ever likely to see on this earth.
From the very first minute to the very last, United were all over Roma. The play was fast, quick, slick and just brilliant. Smith started upfront as the lone striker with Rooney, Ronaldo and Giggs in support and Fletcher and Carrick in the midfield just behind them. It was Fletcher and Smith that put in some impressive work as they spent the whole game bitting at the heels of the Roma players. Their determination gave the rest of the team the chance to push forward and join in.
The opening goal was brilliant from long range. Ronaldo for the wing saw Carrick run into space from the half way line and slotted the ball into his path perfectly for Carrick to hit it straight at goal in one swift movement. Alan Smith got the second with some great passing football setting him up on the edge of the area with a neat shot into the top corner. It was a well deserved goal and its good to have him back for the final run in of the season.
Rooney got the third only seconds after the restart from a really quick break out of our own half and United were 3-0 up after only 20 mins. Ronaldo got the next two, one just before and one just after half time. It was a shame he didn’t finish his hat trick because as always he looked like he really wanted to just score as many as possible every time he got the ball.
After that Roma were starting to lag knowing the game was lost. However out of almost nothing they managed a consolation goal. Totti crossed to the edge of the area and with such a simple flick, almost with his back to the goal, Daniele De Rossi got the ball into the United net, Van Der Sar really wasn’t expecting the ball to come his way and got no where near it, but its was of little consolation.
Carrick went on to get his second and substitute Evra got only his second United goal to make it 7-1 come the final whistle. Its starting to look like it could turn out to be a very profitable season for United. The treble is a very likely possibility if we are going to play like that a few more times. Hopefully now we have a few players returning from injury in the next few weeks we’ll have a full squad to fight the last few important games with and this could certainly be a year to remember. Either way this game will not be forgotten for a very long time. A lot of big clubs are going to be slightly more scared of coming to Old Trafford after see what happened there last night.
